VA BIRDers,
Harry Gurkin, Larry Meade and myself did the FAS Potomac Waterfowl Count in
Area 7 today (the Great Marsh of Mason Neck and around to the mouth of Gunston
Bay as well as anything we can squeeze out of the Maryland side nearly a mile
away). Highlights were 4 Black Scoters flying out of Gunston Bay into the
Potomac (lots of hunting today! can you shoot ducks in the water from a moving
boat?) and Pine Siskins in two different locations mixed in with American
Goldfinch. We also noted a single Forster's Tern. The best locations were
near the Great Marsh and along Hallowing Point. The totals were:
Pied-billed Grebe 1
DC Cormorant 7
Canada Goose 752
Tundra Swan 136
Gadwall 250
American Wigeon 40
American Black Duck 76
Mallard 84
Northern Shoveler 3
Green-winged Teal 2
Canvasback 5
Ring-necked Duck 5
Greater Scaup 18
Lesser Scaup 4172
Black Scoter 4
Bufflehead 108
Hooded Merganser 11
Red-breasted Merganser 3
Ruddy Duck 54
Bald Eagle 6

Greater Yellowlegs 10
Forster's Tern 1
