I believe I saw the female eider in question on Saturday, Nov 30th, on
island # 1. When I saw it at 2 PM it was alone and very close to the rocks
on the east side of the island. I did not notice rufous coloring (although
it was still cloudy early that afternoon so the light wasn't the best) nor
scaled feathers. The bill was relatively light colored not dark, it had a
definite "nail" at the tip and it extended nearly up to the eye. Based on
all of this I concluded it was a female Common Eider. I did not take the
time to scope the bird as I had limited time to bird Saturday afternoon and
wanted to get on to the more exciting islands. Little did I know that the
most interesting bird I'd see all afternoon was this eider on island # 1!
