Northern Virginia Bird Club visited Sky Meadows SP on November 30 with 9
members including co-leaders ,Erika Wilson and John Drummond.Trials covered
including the walk down from the Visitor's Centre to the farm buildings ,
where road kill carcasses are left for raptors and then later Bridal Trial
just as the cold front moved through.
Highlights were Bald Eagle of many plumage variations , Northern Harrier ,
Rough-legged Hawk , Red-headed Woodpecker , Horned Lark ,Loggerhead Shrike (
a lifer for Dorothy ) , and American Tree Sparrow . We did not see the
Rough-legged Hawk in flight but did have reasonable perched views and believe
that it was in either juvenal light phase or female plumage. I suspect that
it is the same bird reported last weekend by Kurt Gaskill and myself , which
is a good sign that it may stay around for a while ,attracted no doubt like
the Bald Eagles to the free hand outs by the park authorities.
