Howdy all,
Well, what can I say! The MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER that was banded today was
the best bird of my banding career and one of, if not, THE rarest bird ever
banded at Kiptopeke!
We were having a very good day as it was, but the dam broke at 11am when we
caught the Mac! I am still excited! I really hope the bird hangs around so
other birders can see this fantastic bird! WOW is all I can say!
The brief north winds last night did push in quite a few birds. We saw
another wave of sparrows and PALM WARBLERS today. Other nice birds banded today
include our third CEDAR WAXWING of the season and a few AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES.
Here are the totals for the 8 Nov.:
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Eastern Phoebe 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler 141
Yellow Palm Warbler 4
Western Palm Warbler 2
MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER 1 First for Virginia!!! Let alone for
the station!
Slate-colored Junco 6
Field Sparrow 3
Swamp Sparrow 10
Song Sparrow 10
White-throated Sparrow 4
Hermit Thrush 3
Cedar Waxwing 1 third of the season
American Goldfinch 4
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
TOTAL --------------------------- 193
It is kind of funny, on the third day of banding this season (17 Aug) we
caught a Cerulean Warbler (the stations 4th ever). At that point, I thought
that
was going to be the best bird of the season! Then a month later we caught the
stations first ever Green Heron! Then a month after that we caught the third
ever Rusty Blackbird. Now a few weeks later we caught the stations and the
STATES first ever MacGillivray's Warbler! Does it really get any better than
this!???
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
