The beach at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge/False Cape State Park has
been host to a few Red Knots through the fall. On Friday, November 4, Bob
Ake and I spotted 39 in one group, none banded or tagged. They were a
considerable distance down the beach, approximately 7 miles from the Refuge
Visitor Center. The beach is open to visitation, however, the Back Bay
impoundments are closed for the winter to prevent disturbance to wintering
waterfowl. Contact the Refuge for dates and times of monthly tram tours to
see the waterfowl.

For up-to-date accounts on what shorebirds and waterfowl are being seen at
Back Bay and False Cape, go to the web-site
http://samigbird.fws.gov/ and follow instructions to view survey results.
Observations are entered at this site by our dedicated birder-volunteer
David Buckley.

Yours,

Dorie
