VA BIRDers,
Rich Rieger and I did some scouting near the Great Marsh for the upcoming FAS
field trip next weekend. We found a Black Scoter, adult female, feeding with 4
Lesser Scaup off the mouth of the Great Marsh.
We also noted that the scaup raft is growing but the numbers of dabblers are
still a bit low. We estimate the scaup number about 2200 on the Potomac
between the Great Marsh and Indian Head, MD. On Belmont Bay, the scaup raft
numbered about 1700.
Our vantage point did not allow us to fully view the waterfowl in and near the
Great Marsh, but of what did see, the following estimates were made:
Double-creasted Cormorant 1
Canada Goose 70
Tundra Swan 10
Gadwall 45
Am. Wigeon 16
Am. Black Duck 125
Mallard 50
No. Pintail 10
Green-winged Teal 2
Canvasback 1
Greater Scaup 1
Lesser Scaup (VA side) 190
Black Scoter 1
Bufflehead 10
Hooded Merganser 5
Ruddy Duck 10
Bald Eagle 4
Greater Yellowlegs 1
Belmont Bay was dominated by the scaup raft and about 500 Ruddy Ducks with a
few Ring-necked Ducks and Gadwall also present.
