A Virginia Rail was heard at 8 AM today at the Blandy Experimental Farm in
Clarke County, VA. The bird was calling from the edge of Lake Arnold (the
largest of Blandy's ephemeral ponds) within about 20 feet of the loop
road. Also on the lake were three Pied-billed Grebes, a pair of American
Coots, and a pair of Black Ducks mixed among Mallards and Canada
Geese. Three Common Snipe and a Greater Yellowlegs were seen at the
water's edge. Seven species of sparrows, including many White-crowned,
Swamp, and Savannah, were seen in the nearby Meadow. Several Red-breasted
Nuthatches are being seen daily in the conifers near the Quarters building.
