[va-bird] Loggerheaded Shrike by Orange

On my way back from Northern Va. today, late afternoon, heading south on
hwy 15, I saw a Loggerheaded Shrike on the utility wires about 200yds south of
the Great Run bridge. Just the one bird and it had something small in its
grasp, the size of a small vole or large grasshopper that was making it hard
for it
to perch on the wire. Further south on hwy15 about 6 miles south of
Gordonsville there were 3 Eastern Meadowlarks on the wires, but I literally
almost
always(weekly) see Eastern Meadowlarks on the wires of this stretch of hwy15. I
got home about dusk to count about 60 Cedar Waxwings in the back yard. Last
year
about this time they started congregating until there were about 150 birds
and they stayed several weeks until they stripped all the berries off the
cedars
and then they were all gone in the blink of an eye. The 38 Canadian geese in
the front yard lake are very active and vocal. I think they aren't sure if its
summer or fall because of these warm days. I'm wondering myself. Enjoy them
while there here, folks! Dave White Zion Crossroads
