An early White-winged Scoter was seen rafting up with a grebes and coots
for the night at South Holston Lake, Washington Co., VA. It was observed
from Musick's Campground late in the day (11/2).

The bird was found by Ruth Smith, Janice Martin, Rack Cross and Wallace Coffey.

It had been discovered earlier just across the line in Sullivan Co., TN
about an hour before dark.

Nearby were Lesser Scaup 9, American Coot 6, Eared Grebe 7, Common Loon 2,
Ring-billed Gull 1, Pied-billed Grebe ~12, Mallards ~25 and Canada Goose
~105. Eared Grebes have been regular fall and winter visitors at South
Holston Lake for 10 consecutive years and enjoyed by many western Virginia
birders.

It was a beautiful fall day and great birding weather.

Let's go birding....
