[va-bird] Eastern Shore Saw-whet Owls

Greetings from the Center for Conservation Biology,
To keep everyone posted on our owl study, during the night of November 7/8
Fletcher Smith captured 5 new Saw-whets to bringing the season total to 39. He
also caught one that had been banded at Cape May in 2001.
Here are some interesting 2002 recovery anecdotes about these neat little
birds. One hatch year bird banded on the Eastern Shore 29 November 1999 was
caught 21 October 2002 near Cresco, PA by staff of the Pocono Avian Research
Center. Gene Sattler's Saw-whet banding operation over near Lynchburg caught a
bird the night of 4 November 2002 that had been banded 29 October 2001 on the
Eastern Shore.
Hopefully we'll have more stories to tell as the weeks go on.
Bill Williams, CCB
