As part of its first membership drive/fund-raising campaign entitled,
"Preserving the Legacy," which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the
Songbird Research Station at Kiptopeke, the Observatory would like to invite
everyone on the List Serve to become a member. The Observatory is not backed
by any foundation or government organization and derives funding from
memberships, grants and events such as The Kiptopeke Challenge team birding
competition and Run for the Birds! which is co-sponsored with the Eastern
Shore Birding Festival. Observatory staff and volunteers regularly post
research information throughout the year on the List Serve, which is a
valuable tool for disseminating such information.
The non-profit Observatory has set a goal of 1,000 members, which would
provide a substantial portion of the budget needed to operate the fall and
spring songbird operations, the fall hawkwatch, fall hawk banding, Monarch
Migration Program and printing of its environmental education materials (see
the website at www.cvwo.org). Basic membership, which runs from January
through December, is only $20 annually and includes newsletters and research
reports. An incentive gift for a $100 membership is an OPTECH/USA binocular
strap, with the Observatory's name printed on it. There are other incentives
for larger donations. Memberships, payable by check to CVWO, may be mailed to
CVWO at P.O. Box 912, Eastville, VA 23347. To request a campaign packet with
brochure and more detailed information about Observatory activities,
membership levels and volunteer opportunities, please contact CVWO
Vice-president Bob Ake directly, at akeneff@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thanks to those on
the List Serve who are already members, your support is greatly appreciated!
