Now that the rain has finally stopped, I decided to check Roaches Run and
Gravelly Point in Arlington Co. today. In the big pond at Roaches Run I
found at least 8 Pied-billed Grebes, my first Am. Coot there this fall, and 2
Caspian Terns. At Gravelly Point, the highlights were a Red-tailed Hawk
perched on a street light, 2 immature White-crowned Sparrows, and an Eastern
Meadowlark. I also estimated at least 150 Brown-headed Cowbirds were in the
flock on the grassy area. I think this was the first time I had seen
White-crowns there, and it certainly was the first Meadowlark. Amazingly, in
all the years I have lived and birded here, I don't ever recall having seen a
Meadowlark in Arlington before this year--and now I have seen 2!
Happy Halloween!
