I birded Occoquan NWR for a few hours this gorgeous morning, primarily along
Charlie Rd. There were lots of birds around, and I wound up seeing 60 species.
Highlights were a marsh wren in a field about half way between the wildlife
drive and the river, a singing blue-headed vireo near the river, both
gray-cheeked and swainson's thrush along the river feeding on grapes with tons
of robins, 4 rusty-blackbirds, a king rail calling from the marsh, and a
white-crowned sparrow. Swamp sparrows have invaded the place, and I saw about
30. Also in large numbers were yellow-rumped warblers (75+), indigo buntings
(25+), eastern bluebirds (20), and chimney swift (30). I saw palm, magnolia,
Cape May, and blackpoll warblers, and common yellowthroat. I also saw both
kinglets, and 3 kestrels.
