Hello, birders.

I had a fun, long day at Sky Meadows on Sunday. I
mostly spent time on the Bridle Trail. Lots of birds,
lots of variety there, esp. for early Oct. Highlight
was a singing LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, migrating raptors and
10 sparrow species incl. LINCOLN'S and WHITE-CROWNED.
Many sparrows were in the weedy field behind the
ranger residence. Migrants were in evidence all day.
Late species are in while earlier species hang on.

List of migrants and other notables is below:

-Pied-billed Grebe, 1. In fishing pond.

-B. Vulture, 3. May not have been migrants.
-T. Vulture, 11. May not have been migrants.
-B. Eagle, 8 (7 ad., 1 imm.)
-No. Harrier, 1 male hunting the fields in early morn.
-Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2+
-Cooper's Hawk, 2+
-accipiter sp., 2
-Red-tailed Hawk, 4. I believe that at least 2 were
locals.
-other unidentified hawks, 5
-Am. Kestrel, 2 (locals)

-Ch. Swift, 9 or so. Some with swallows.

-all 7 woodpecker sp. Red-headed was tallied only
near the contact station.

-E. Phoebe, 9

-L. Shrike, 1 possibly 2. First found it E of the
fishing ponds along fence line singing from a bush and
tangled vine. Later, I found what was probably the
same bird perched in a bush along the stream just W of
the ponds.

-White-eyed Vireo, 1 singing
-Blue-headed Vireo, 3
-Red-eyed Vireo, 1

-Blue Jay, 33. Scattered everywhere.

-Tree Swallow, 2+. At least they were probable Trees.
Mixed with swifts and other unID'd swallows, all
distant. If Tree Swallows, they were migrants, as
breeding Trees at Sky Meadows leave in July. In
recent years I and others have noticed this species
coming through the park in Oct.

-B. Creeper, 2

-House Wren, 2
-Winter Wren, 5. Great looks.

-G.c. Kinglet, 25
-R.c. Kinglet, 21

-Am. Robin, 13

-Gr. Catbird, 7

-Cedar Waxwing, 11

-Yel. rumped Warbler, 14
-Blk.-thr. Green Warbler, 14
-Palm Warbler, 12 (6 yellow, 4 brown, 2 unID'd)
-Ovenbird, 1
-Com. Yellowthroat, 2

-Sc. Tanager, 1

-E. Towhee, 10
-Chipping Sparrow, 1. Contact station only.
-Field Sparrow, 6
-Savannah Sparrow, 9
-Song Sparrow, 40+
-Swamp Sparrow, 1 near duck ponds. There were
probably more but I hardly birded this area.
-White-thr. Sparrow, 15
-White-cr. Sparrow, 5 (2 ad., 3 imm.)
-D.e. Junco, 2

-I. Bunting, 1

-R.w. Blackbird, 20

Happy birding,

Scott Baron
