At Flint Hill School and adjacent Oak Marr Park,
the past week has been interesting.
Last Saturday (9/30) an adult sharp-shinned hawk
caught a cowbird and started eating it on the
outfield fence. That same afternoon 76 Monarchs
flew over the football game during the first
three quarters. A Cooper's Hawk which was chasing
a flock of starlings during half time has been
seen three times during the week. On Tuesday 10/3
the first of season winter wrens (2) and
golden-crowned kinglets (2) appeared while we
searched for box turtles. That day we also had
two phoebes and a black-and-white warbler. A
rose-breasted grosbeak was heard on Wednesday
10/4. Today (10/7) after the rain subsided
there was the first yellow-rumped warbler flock
for the season (20) and the first influx of
sparrows (4 swamp, 10 white-throated, 5 chipping,
and 7 song) as well as 1 ruby-crowned kinglet, 3
house wrens, 4 chimney swifts, a palm warbler,
and a black-throated green warbler. The campus
storm-water retention pond had 26 mallard (19
male), 1 black duck, and a great blue heron.
All the best
