Dear Birders,
Our visit to Cumberland Marsh here in New Kent County yielded several warblers,
2 Great Egrets, a couple of flickers and to my surprise, a Blue Grosbeak (or
more) We forgot the binoculars and had to rely on my 400mm lens to view the
birds. All the activity was around the lake area. I recently heard a rumor that
the lake may be drained by removing the dam. I have emailed The Nature
Conservancy in Richmond, but haven't heard anything back. This is distressing,
if it is true. It is a well-established lake and the shoreline was a nesting
area for several pairs of Prothonotary Warblers this past spring and summer.
I'm hoping to get more information about this. It scares me that we may go up
there one day to find bulldozers tearing down the dam, or worse..to find the
lake gone! We try to get up there at least once a week.
Got some nice images of a Pine Warbler

and the Blue Grosbeak. Not sure if it is a female or an imm. male.

When we got home and were getting out of the car, there were 2 Black-Throated
Green warblers in a tree in our driveway. They flew off before I could haul out
my camera.
Happy birding..
