Hello Virginia Birders,

Thought you all might be interested to know that the National Audubon
Society has recently revamped its Important Bird Areas (IBA) web links
and you can now check the current status of the Virginia IBA Program
online from the National webpage. The IBA Program is an international
effort to identify and then conserve a network of sites across a given
state, country, continent - and ultimately, world - that are critically
important for sustaining bird populations. Virginia has a relatively
new program, but, with the help of so many of you, we have been making
great progress in site identification across Virginia - the first step
toward conservation.

To check out the current status of the VA IBA Program and to view the
most recent list of identified sites go to www.audubon.org
<http://www.audubon.org/> . Click on the Birds and Science tab at the
top of the page and then follow the links for Bird Conservation, and
Important Bird Areas. This will bring you to a map of the United States
where you can click on the state of your choice
(http://www.audubon.org/bird/iba/index.html). Each will bring you to a
brief description about the IBA program in the given state and will take
you to a featured IBA page where you can then link to the entire state
IBA list or to the state homepage.

The Virginia list will be updated periodically and we expect to add many
new sites in the next few months, so keep checking back. Also, feel
free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions about the
IBA Program or the current IBAs.

Happy birding!

Aimee Weldon
