VA BIRDers,
I dropped by North Fork Wetlands early this afternoon to help prepare for the
upcoming Fairfax Audubon Sparrow Field Trip (Oct 25). In addition to the usual
sparrows I came across a very bright Orange-crowned Warbler - certainly the
brightest celata I have ever seen in Virginia approaching orestera in strength
(the photo on p. 165 in Dunn and Garrett's "Warblers" comes very close to
today's bird). The bird was strongly bluish-gray hooded and the entire
underparts were yellowish with the usual dull streaks. The hooded look was so
strong that, at first glance, I thought I had found a Nashville! But the split
(narrow) eye ring quickly caused me to reconsider. The bird pished in rather
easily and emitted a few of its hard check call notes. A nearby Yellow Palm
Warbler gave a fine comparison. A great treat!
