We found a single Bobolink at about 4:30 Saturday afternoon in the Meadow
at the Blandy Experimental Farm, Clarke County, VA. This seems unusually
late for this species, but I had seven in that same spot on October
2. Other birds seen at Blandy on Saturday included an adult Bald Eagle
perched in a cottonwood above Lake Arnold, 6 Pied-billed Grebes and an
American Coot on Lake Arnold, and a single Rusty Blackbird among a flock of
Red-wings. In the conifers near the Quarters we found 5 Red-breasted
Nuthatches in a mixed flock that included White-breasted Nuthatches and
both Golden and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers and
Common Yellowthroats, Juncos, White-throated and Swamp Sparrows were seen
in a number of spots around the Arboretum.
