[va-bird] Oct 5 River Bend CT Warb, migrants

My afternoon foray to River Bend Park (Fairfax Co. next to Great Falls
NP) was rewarded with great views of my lifer Connecticut Warbler! I was
at the park from 3:00 to 4:30 this afternoon. There was one wave of
warblers near the nature center with Amer. Redstart and TN Warblers, and
others I couldn?t quite catch up with. In the meadow I found a Ruby
Crowned Kinglet in the trees under the wires sallying for bugs and
hovering about. There was also a yellowish Scarlet Tanager with a
mouthful of bug, eyeing me as much as I was watching her. The highlight
was the COWA. After I walked the loop around the meadow and was heading
out I flushed a couple of birds out in front of me along the hedge under
the wires. At first I thought they were sparrows, but I was very
pleasantly surprised to see lots of yellow, gray head and a complete
white eye-ring. I got great looks as he took his time in the warmth of
the afternoon sun to work the hedge row in front of me. I never did see
who his partner was. River Bend is a wonderful place to bird. I always
enjoy my outings there and would highly recommend it to anyone. There
were a few Indigo Buntings, also, and a flock of hundreds of Grackles.
Complete list follows.
