Not a lot of birds this frosty morning, but some nice ones to be sure. Sedge
Wren and a pair of VA Rails (doing the grunting calls from both sides of the
road) were at the top of the list. Both species were 2/3 the way down the road
that bears off to the left from the parking lot as you start out. Other
highlights include a dozen Savannah and several Swamp Sparrows greeting me
right off
the bat, adult Cooper's Hawk being chased by a Crow, Wood Thrush in the swamp
near the shore, a half dozen each Yellow-rumped and Palm (western) Warblers,
and 30 Ruddy Ducks out from the gazebo.
The sign says the new hours as of Oct.1: 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Part of the fence along the river is down, thanks to Hurricane Isabel, but
the viewing is a lot better for me now.
