This evening just after sundown (7pm), I saw several huge flocks of tree
swallows wheeling about and landing on power lines and nearby trees and then
taking off again.
I would esitmate at least 6,000 swallows were seen, but easily more. The
birds were along the Shenandoah River in east Rockingham Co. Soon after this
spectacular sight, about 500 more tree swallows flew overhead heading south
from a different location. They were 200 feet up and calling- giving me
their identity.
30 ducks (maybe wood) flew by quickly heading upriver (south) . A great
blue heron flew by heading to its roost for the evening. A few
white-throated sparrows called.
