[va-bird] Not much today @ Dyke & Huntley

Hello Everyone,
I perched myself this AM from sunrise and Larry Meade joined me shortly
thereafter. We did not see anything really unusual or tropical, though I did
count 7 Royal Terns, all flying downriver at first light. After that, it was
only Caspians for the rest of the morning. It is nice to hear the Royals'
calls away from the beach vs the Caspians' usual craack!
As we were leaving, I caught sight of a dark brown-black bird at a fair
distance banking as it went in for a landing. All I could see was that it had
a broad white stripe through the middle of each pallette-shaped wing before it
disappeared. I did not note a large orange bill in my brief look, but the only
thing that comes to mind that matches the size and wing pattern is an
Oystercatcher. Larry and I walked down Haul Rd to the end looking for it, but
came up empty. I'll never be sure I suppose.
After this, we visited Huntley Meadows and found no Phalaropes. Present were
the 3 Tringa, a Spotted Sand, and a few Least Peeps. There was a Little Blue
Heron in the main marsh. Several Bank Swallows circled around. Nice weather,
however!
Take Care,
Jay Keller,
Arlington
