Birders,
Thanks to the recent storm, yesterday's bird walk at Mason Neck State Park
had the best warbler sightings yet this season. At least two mixed-species
flocks were busy and noisy along the Bay View Trail, and BLACK-&-WHITE
WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and others were clearly
observed. Highlights also included large numbers of N. ROUGH-WINGED
SWALLOWS, BARN SWALLOWS, and (later in the day) CHIMNEY SWIFTS hawking
insects over the marsh, bay, and even Visitor Center. A full list is below,
with species seen later in the day starred.
The bird walk takes place every Saturday at Mason Neck State Park from
9-11am. We meet at the Visitor Center, bird along the Bay View Trail, and
conclude in the picnic area. All are welcome and no reservations are
needed. The next walk is Saturday, September 9, and will be guest led by
Scott Baron. Any questions may be directed to me at the phone number or
email listed below.
