VA Birders,

We have started getting a few migrants at Fort C. F. Smith Park in
Arlington Co. Today, Monday, Sep. 5 (Labor Day), I arrived at the park at 8:30
am
to find an AM. KESTREL, our first of the fall season, perched up in the bare
limbs of a Sycamore. Our only warblers were AM. REDSTARTS and COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS, but about 1:00 pm, just as I was getting ready to leave, a
PHILADELPHIA
VIREO showed up near the Bird Stream.

Yesterday afternoon, Sunday, Sep. 4, Joanna Taylor and I saw a NASHVILLE
WARBLER which came and bathed in the stream while we were there.

We had at least 4 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS at the stream both days, and they
provided an excellent study in immature and female plumages of this species.
One young male already had quite a bit of a black mask, and another had just
the grayish markings on his cheeks which are shown in some field guides. One
of the females was considerably brighter on the throat than the other one. I
think we had the same 4 yellowthroats both days.

Good birding,
Val Kitchens
Arlington, VA
