[va-bird] The Joy of Birding

Birders,
Saturday, Rosemarie and I drove to Skyline Drive to look for fall
migrants. Only saw one wave of warblers at S. River Falls Parking Area
with the "best" bird being an adult Blackburnian Warbler. The birds
were in tree tops and we only ID'ed THREE species! Considering that
gasoline was $3.21 per gallon, it was not a very productive trip.
Sunday morning, we saw two Blackburnian Warblers in our yard.
This morning we had a major fallout of warblers in the yard with trees
and shrubs jumping with birds. The star of the show was a BREWSTER'S
WARBLER, a first fall female, second generation. Reference: Jon
Dunn/Kimball Garrett, Peterson Field Guide to Warblers. To paraphrase
a distinguished Tidewater birder, the book was just like the bird. YB

There were easily 100-200 birds flitting about with identified birds
being Magnolia, Blackburnian (2) and Chestnut-sided, plus a Scarlet
Tanager. After ten or fifteen minutes the flock was gone and we were
back to watching the local stuff.
This year we had Eastern Bluebirds fledge three clutches of eggs from
the same nest box. Four birds were fledged each time (approx. May 15,
July 10, August 30).
