So far this season of Common Nighthawk watching at Van Dyck Park in
Fairfax City, VA has been disappointing. I have seen a few every evening
since August 25, but have had only one small flight (20 on August 31). I am
short hundreds of nighthawks compared to this time the previous 5 seasons.
However, this evening showed some promise. I saw a group of 10 moving south
at 1855 after a brief rain shower and another group of at least 38 flying NE
at 1915. My to date total is 167 only 15% or so of my 5 year average.
Once this stagnant weather pattern and the remnants of Frances move out
of the area(hopefully by Thursday) I expect to have at least one good
flight.
