Report for Wednesday, September 1, 2004
Arrived by 6 p.m. and joined Robert Plank and Rick Myers. There was only
the faintest whisper of wind out of the SE, light cloud cover and air
temperature at 73 degrees farenheit.
Here is breakdown of the flight of Common Nighthawk:
5:47 p.m. EST - 13 heading south (flew directly overhead)
6:01 p.m. EST - 14 on same flight pattern
6:20 p.m. EST - 9 heading West over gap
6:23 p.m. EST - Robert Plank spotted a very large flock of birds to the NW
over the Waynesboro plant. Because of distance and haze and without a
spotting scope, I was unable get an accurate count but the LARGE swirling
cloud of Common Nighthawk clearly surpassed 200. They slowly drifted west
toward the setting sun.
6:40 p.m. EST - 7 heading west
Total: 250+
A late hummingbird zipped by at 6:45 p.m. EST (7:45 EDST!).
