[va-bird] buff-breasted sandpipers in Westmoreland County

Finally after checking dozens of fields I found a
newly plowed very large field between Leedstown
and Horner's (in Westmoreland County) on route
625 that had lots of killdeer in it so I looked
in it carefully as I counted the killdeer. The
field starts at the intersection of 625 and 640
but the best part of the field this afternoon was
the part furthest from 640. Here is what I found
in that field from about 3-4:00 PM Sept 6:
125 killdeer (maybe more; it's a big field with
big clods.)
2 pectoral sandpiper
1 least sandpiper
3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER (my first in VA)Watched
for a good long time. Nice!
Further down the road towards Leedstown I heard a
semipalmated plover but couldn't find it and just
beyond Leedstown I found 25-30 horned larks in
the field across the street from where there were
scores of horned larks with longspurs last
winter.
Also found in a thick scrubby patch of woods in
Leedstown at about 5:00 were:
2 yellow-bellied flycatcher
1 empidonax sp
2 veery
1 ovenbird
3 redstart
1 hooded warbler (nice male with a caterpillar!)
2 yellowthroat
1 white-eyed vireo
1 red-eyed vireo
I wonder what we will catch at our banding
station in Oakton tomorrow!
All the best
Fred
