VA Birders,
I went to Fort Smith Park, Arlington Co., about 11:30 am this morning,
after the light improved and it looked like the sun might even come out for a
bit, to see if any birds might be coming to our Bird Stream in the park. To my
amazement, I had 16 species of birds come to the water while I was there, and
several more that came down but didn't drink or bathe while I was watching
them. Included in the bathers were Blue-winged, Yellow (both male and female,
separately), and Black-and-while Warblers, a Baltimore Oriole, and a pair of
Carolina Wrens. An empid flycatcher, which I suspect was an Acadian, and a
Red-eyed Vireo came and skimmed the top of the water. Species which came down
but
didn't actually go in the water included Prairie Warbler, Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher, and an Orchard Oriole. I had planned to stay at the park only
about an
hour and a half, but every time I started to leave another good bird showed up,
so I ended up staying there nearly 3 hours.
