Howdy all,
Well the past four days have been slow again, but at least today (9/1), we
banded 25. A little better.
We banded 11 birds on the 29th, a whopping 2 birds on the 30th, 5 on the 31th,
and 25 today. Maybe this is the start of migration for us here. It is bound to
pick up sometime!!
The best bird for the station during the last four days was a Louisiana
Waterthrush that was banded today. It was only the 3 LOWA to be banded here
since 1993! A very uncommon capture here. And boy was it a cutie! Also today we
had a better day on Empidonaxs. Six "Traill's" Flycatchers were banded today.
Also new for the season today was an Eastern Kingbird and a Veery.
So today was much better.
Rumor has it that a cool front is coming this way. If it does and the timing is
right, we could be setting up for our first big day. My fingers are crossed!!
Here is the list of the birds banded between the 29 Aug--1 Sept.
American Redstart 12
Ovenbird 4
Louisiana Waterthrush 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 3
Veery 1
Traill's Flycatcher 7
Carolina Chickadee 3
Carolina Wren 3
Eastern Kingbird 1
Northern Cardinal 2
Northern Mockingbird 6

Total 43
Season total is 161

It sounds like migrants are starting to arrive in better numbers. I hope
everyone is getting out and enjoying the start of the fall migration!

And for those of you that are interested, butterflies have been in good numbers
at the Kiptopeke State Park Butterfly Garden, with a variety of butterflies
being seen. A good place to be on them "slow" banding days!
