Observation start time: 12:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 3 hours
Official Counter: Brenda Tekin
Observers: Gordy Adamski
Weather:
Fog and rain cleared out for most of the day, much warmer and very humid!
Wind - light from SE
Temp (high): 26.5c
Humidity: 77%
Bar.Pressure: 1018
Cloud Cover: nice white cirrus and small white clouds providing great
background.
Unfortunately, dark clouds began moving up from south by 2:15 and by 3
p.m. a very large dark storm cloud was heading out way. By time we packed
it up and got to vehicles, rain had started. We made it to our respective
homes ahead of another thunderstorm packing lots of wind and rain.
Observations:
Small flurry of activity with three Osprey and single Bald Eagle within 10
minutes of each other.
The single adult Bald Eagle (1:09 p.m. EST) came in close for great
views.
Highlight was season's first imm. Northern Goshawk. First observed flying
over hotel from south heading north where it circled and worked the north
ridge in search of a meal. It was last seen drifting SE along with a BW.
It is possible this may be the same imm. Northern Goshawk seen in
Rockingham County, near Weyer's Cave, approximately 35 miles NW from
Rockfish Gap as the "crow" flies, maybe less. Yesterday's goshawk was an
immature first found and photographed along Rt. 276 at Faught's Rd. around
11:15 a.m. and last observed around 4 p.m. by several individuals.
A Cooper's Hawk came over shortly after the Goshawk providing a
comparison between the two accipters for the four observers.
DC Cormorant - 1 heading east over hotel before veering SE
Chimney Swift and Am. Tree Swallow on the move.
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 3 un.
Monarch Butterfly - 3
