At Kiptopeke State Park this afternoon, 10 American Golden-Plovers and 5
Buff-breasted Sandpipers, along with 6 Black-bellied Plovers, 8 Semipalmated
Plovers, 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers, and 8 Killdeer were on the back bean
field, newly plowed. The golden-plover were checked for Pacifics, but no
candidates were found (a Pacific Golden-Plover was in New Jersey this time
last year). The Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR's Ramp Road pond held the same
mix of shorebirds as in previous days, including 5 Stilt Sandpipers, but the
Wilson's Phalarope was not seen today. A Yellow-headed Blackbird was
apparently noted at the intersection of Rte 13 and Rte 642, not far from the
Chevron gas station; a visiting birder logged the record at Kiptopeke but no
observer name or plumage was mentioned. There have been small flocks of
Red-winged Blackbirds in this area and on Rte 600, but a check of these this
afternoon produced no Yellow-headed. A modest hawk flight, mostly of
American Kestrels, drifted by the hawkwatch today, and a Blue-winged Warbler
was a highlight at the banding station. Smoke from an enormous brush fire
that reignited on Parramore Island covered much of lower Northampton County
today; hopefully, a cold front will push it out in days to come.
Word on the White-winged Tern is unclear. A visiting birder from New Jersey
reported the bird yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, but as of 3:00 p.m. today
it had not been reported at Swan Cove.
