[va-bird] Nighthawks going the wrong way

VA Birders,
This evening I counted 56 Common Nighthawks between 7:20 and 8:20. None of
these were close enough to be seen without the aid of 12 power binoculars.
They were not so high as they were distant. If I had not been on a mountain
top I wouldn't have seen them. The most unusual thing was that they were all
flying in a northerly direction. In past evenings the birds I saw were
headed south or east. The birds this evening were not one single flock.
These were birds several minutes apart. Does anyone know why they do this?
Are they heading for a feeding ground, or a gathering place before they head
on south?

Good Birding,

Roger Mayhorn
Grundy, VA
