[va-bird] Loudoun Turf Farm 9/1/02

After the rains let up today, I briefly birded the turf farm fields along
Loudoun County Parkway and Smith-Switch Rd. at about 3:00 PM Sunday. The
pond where we have been seeing Bairds and other shorebirds was without birds.
Nor were there any shorebirds in the muddy field on opposite side of the
road, only about 100 Canada Geese.
From Smith Switch Road, I did count about 30 Killdeer, but no other
shorebirds. I did not stay long, so may have overlooked something. The area
is extensive and other shorebird species may have been farther afield. With
all the rain though, it seems likely that this area will continue to attract
newly arriving shorebirds.
