Four birders braved the elements for a truncated walk (we quit at 10:00 AM due
to heavy rain) at dyke Marsh. The count of 42 species was unusually low (we
missed goldfinches and had to work hard to get even Red-bellied Woodpecker)!
Nonetheless, we were rewarded with (I believe) our first Green-winged Teal of
the year. A Warbling Vireo (most likely a migrant) was nice surprise and a
pair of Prothonotary Warblers foraging on the ground delighted our small band.
The only other warblers were redstart and parula. We were surprised to find
four empid flycatchers (most likely Willow) near Dead Beaver Beach. A lone
coot and Herring Gull at least put our totals above 40 species.

Pied-billed Grebe- 13
DC Cormorant- 67
Great Blue Heron- 45
Great Egret- 52
Canada Goose- 70

Green-winged Teal- 2
Osprey- 2

American Coot- 1
Greater Yellowlegs- 2 (foraging on the SAV)

Ring-billed Gull- 600
Herring Gull- 1

Great Black-backed Gull- 7
Caspian Tern- 2
Forster's Tern- 17
Mourning Dove- 2
Ruby-throated Hummingbird- 1

Belted Kingfisher- 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker- 2
Downy Woodpecker- 3
Northern Flicker- 2
Empid flycatcher (probably Willow-4)

Warbling Vireo- 1
American Crow- 3
Purple Martin- 15 (flyovers)
Barn Swallow- 6
Car. Chickadee- 12

Tufted Titmouse- 6
Carolina Wren- 18
American Robin- 2
Gray Catbird- 17 ( a Catbird convention on the boardwalk!)
Euro Starling- 50

N. Parula- 1 (picnic area)
American Redstart- 1 (singing!)
Prothonotary Warbler- 3 (Haul Road)
N. Cardinal- 13
Red-winged Blackbird- 7

Common Grackle- 7 (the rest must be down at Leesylvania still engaging cicadas)
House Sparrow- 2

No Goldfinches! Geez, how embarrassing)
The Hunting Creek portion was cancelled due to heavy rain. Too bad, low tide
was just after 10:00AM.
