At the Evergreen Mill Hiking and Equestrian Trail this
morning: 2 NORTHERN BOBWHITE, 1 AM. KESTREL, 1 COMMON
RAVEN.
I watched the kestrel flying high while a large insect
happened to fly alongside it. I was wondering when
the bird would try to make a meal of the creature.
Finally, the kestrel veered to catch the insect but
the insect evaded capture. One more halfhearted and
unsuccessful try by the kestrel would be the last, as
Mr. Kestrel cruised on over to a perch on a dead tree.
The parking lot for the trail is on The Woods Rd., at
intersection of Evergreen Mills Rd. Habitat is fields
with some second growth and some planted Eastern White
Pine. If you go, check yourself for Wood Ticks, they
were abundant. This location is not far from Banshee
Reeks.
