Friends,

Dave Hogg and I traveled to First Landing State Park
yesterday (Thursday, 10 August) and searched for the
Brown Booby in and near the places where it has been
seen. We stayed as long as we could manage and put in
nearly five hours (08:30 am to noon, 01:00 - 02:15 pm)
of search time. Unfortunately, we saw no sign of the
bird.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed seeing species we don't see
at home, such as the numerous terns, including
Sandwich Terns; and the group of 9 Black Skimmers that
passed by twice at a range of barely fifty feet.

There were at least five other birders looking for the
booby at various times yesterday morning and early
afternoon, in addition to Stephen Living. When Dave
and I departed at 02:20 pm, a couple were just
arriving, and a couple from Martinsburg, WV was still
present.

Dave and I walked up and down the beach quite some
distance during our search (good exercise!). When we
reached the beach that is part of Fort Story, a woman
on an ATV visited with us. She was very pleasant and
was aware of the booby (as were many people we talked
to on the beach). Since we had no cameras, we were
allowed to spend time on the Fort Story beach, too.
