All,
Have received an email from the father of a disabled veteran looking
for birding venues offering viewing areas for disabled persons. This
new birder is in a wheel chair and is mostly interested in
photographing birds in flight. The family lives in Northern Virginia,
but they have a van, can travel year-round, and negotiating
observation platforms with only four of five steps may be possible
with the aide of a walker. I have started a list of possible venues
that so far includes:
Northern Virginia:
Occoquan Bay NWR (central parking lot & perhaps the Wildlife Drive)
Leesylvania State Park (Freestone Point & the Fishing Pier)
Jackson Abbott (observation platform)
Riverside Park (pull off)
Chopawamsic Creek Wildlife Viewing Area (observation platform)
Jones Point Park (river front access)
Riverbend Park (river front access)
Belle Haven Marina (river front access)
Elsewhere in Virginia: (Need lots of help here)
Chincoteague NWR
Maryland/DC:
Conowingo Dam (Fisherman's Park)
Lapidum Landing (Boat Landing)
Eastern Neck NWR (observation platform)
Ocean City (4th Street Mud-flats) (sidewalk access)
Washington Channel (sidewalk)
Delaware:
Bombay Hook (roadside pull off)
Indian River Inlet (roadside pull off)
Henlopen State Park (fishing pier)
Anyone wishing to contribute suggestions for other local and out of
town venues should contact me directly.
