Greetings to all:
This morning I carried my big scope to Staunton River State Park to check
for shorebirds and terns. Although I didn't see any terns, I wasn't
disappointed with the shorebirds along with the herons and egrets.
Following is a list of what I found:
GB Herons - 15
Great Egrets - 15
Green Herons - 3
Little Blue Herons - 5 (immature seen all at one time with 4 on a single log
along the Staunton River and as the 5th was flying in, a Bald Eagle flew
overhead causing all to take to the wings.)
DC Cormorants - 4
Bald Eagle - 1 immature
Lesser Yellowlegs - 2
Killdeer 40 (with one being a partial albino with white and spots of brown
on his back and a white head. That made it look like a Black-bellied Plover,
but it had the two breast bands).
Semipalmated Plover - 2
Pectoral Sandpipers - 76
Spotted Sandpipers - 5
Semipalmated Sandpipers - 4
Mallard - 4
Wood Duck - 1
Belted Kingfisher - 2
Canada Goose - 24
There were flocks of Chipping Sparrows around and Pine Warblers heard in the
trees along with others song birds; however, I was looking mostly for terns
and shorebirds for a few hours.
Good Birding Always
