In early August of 2002, I asked readers of the Lynchburg News and
Advance who had hummingbird feeders to count the birds that were visiting
their yards and let me know how many they saw. This was the first
hummingbird count for the Central Virginia area, and it was so successful
that I decided to try this as an annual event. In 2002 I received
reports from 64 people who counted 825 hummingbirds at 213 feeders. Last
year we had 202 participants who counted 1558 ruby-throated hummingbirds
visiting 444 feeders in Central Virginia. I reported the results on the
ListServe and a number of people asked if I could expand the area to
include the whole state so that they could take part in 2006. This year
anyone may participate and I will track the reports by locality.
The date for this, our fifth count, is Saturday, August 5. Try to
estimate the total number of birds visiting your feeder that day. Make
an effort not to count separate visits by the same bird. In other words,
if you only have one bird at a time at your feeder, then one will be the
total number for the day. Please respond to me off-line at
jtdalmas@xxxxxxxxx Please include the number of feeders in your yard and
the city or county of your residence. After compilation, I will post the
results on the ListServe. And, I do understand that the number of birds
observed at the feeder represents only a fraction of the birds that are
actually in the yard. However, it will be interesting to see how many we
can count.

When you count the hummingbirds on August 5, remember that I need:
The number of birds
The number of feeders
The city or county in which you live
