[va-bird] Cameron Run, Alexandria, late morning

Lisa Shannon, Robyn Kells, Scott Clark, and I arrived at Cameron Run some
time after 10 am. We saw two juvenile Little Blue Herons with 5 Snowy
Egrets, and over a dozen Great Egrets (and more Snowies). We saw two
White-rumped Sandpipers along with many Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers;
one Lesser Yellowlegs was with a group of Greaters. We did not see the
Wilson's Phalarope, nor did we detect last weekend's Stilt Sandpiper from
Hunting Creek. A Belted Kingfisher caught food, three male American
Goldfinches held a meeting on a mudflat, a male Mourning Dove puffed up in
front of a female on a mudflat, and the hybrid Graylag x Canada Goose that I
saw near Seminary Road earlier this year was pacing the mud. Charming us
all were at least two Cloudless Sulphurs together at likely host plants
(there may have been more), one Monarch, tandems of both Black Saddlebags
and Wandering Gliders. Halloween Pennant and Twelve-spotted Skimmers were
among the other dragonflies.
Cheers,
Rob Hilton
