[va-bird] Osprey, grebe at T. Roosevelt Island (D.C.)

While strolling around Teddy Roosevelt Island around mid-day
yesterday, we saw an osprey fly past at close range with an ample
catch of the day in its grasp. This was in the marshy inlet, by the
boardwalk. Indicating that migration season is in full swing, we
also saw a winter-plumaged grebe in the main channel of the Potomac
River, about 40 yards away. Based on the long bill, dark crown, and
pale but not white cheeks, I figure it must be red-necked grebe, a
life bird for both of us. Any other possibilities? Others we saw:
Ring-billed gulls (2 adult)
Kingfisher
Kingbirds (2-3)
Hummers (2)
Red-eyed vireo
RW blackbird (M)
Goldfinches
Red-bellied WP
GB heron
Carol. wrens
Titmice
Carol. chickadees
Robins
Cardinals
Grackles
