All,

Just back from the Swallow-tailed Kite in Fauquier county. I encourage
any and all to get out and see this bird. It is a beautiful adult.
Todd Day, Mike Day, Mike Stinson, and I first saw it around 9:00am this
morning soaring and catching bugs over the tree tops to the south west
of the business office at the Marriott Ranch. The bird soared above the
tree line for a while and then dipped below for several minutes. It
reappeared about 3 times before it disappeared for quite a while. We
went off to explore another area of the ranch leaving Val Kitchens and
several others looking for the bird. On our way back from exploring,
Mike spotted the kite soaring over the ridge line to the east of the
business office. We went back to tell those searching to look in the
opposite direction. I had to leave at that point (~10:45) so I don't
know if they spotted it again or not. Shannon Cate, the woman who
reported the bird, said that it is most reliable in the afternoon and is
known to fly right over the house, as Val's experience yesterday showed.

They are most happy to have visitor's as long as you respect their
property. The business office is closed on Saturday so there should be
plenty of parking for those that want to try for the bird on Saturday.
I encourage those that look for it tomorrow to post updates so folks
that can only get out on the weekend will know if the bird is still
around. It has been present since at least July 30th.
