VA-birders,

A Sharp-tailed Sandpiper was found at Bombay Hook in Delaware last
evening. I thought that some of you might want to know about this as
quickly as possible.

"Exciting news --

Just got back from leading a trip down the delmarva coast where we
found
a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper -- a bird from Siberia -- at Bombay Hook! Here
are
the details:
The bird was found at 7:20 PM on Monday August 5th, at the SE corner
of
Bear Swamp close to the road (50 ft.), feeding with a few Least
Sandpipers
and a Killdeer. It is an adult in breeding plumage (not the more likely
immature), with a buffy spotted breast, dark chevons along the side and
streaked under tail coverts. The bird has no sharp breast "cut-off" as in
a
Pectoral Sandpiper. The crown is more rufous than a Pectoral and the
eyebrow
is flaired behing the eye. The bird has a narrow, but obvious eye ring as
well. This is just about the time (and a few hundred yards from) the
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper that was at Bear Swamp in 1993 (I also saw that
bird,
it remained for a while).

I am leading another group to see the Sharp-tailed this morning (August
6th),
and if it remains, will go back on a chase trip this weekend. Let me
know if
you're interested in going. If you go on your own, good luck.

Hope it stays -- let me know if you try for it and if you see it or not.

Also at Bombay Hook on our trip:
Black-headed gull (1st summer bird) still at the NE corner of Bear
Swamp, Sedge Wren at Alee House, White-faced Ibis at NE corner of Bear
Swamp
and several Stilt Sandpipers among many other species of shorebirds.

We saw the Pacific Loon at Seneca in Maryland on August 4th.

Locally, Octoraro Reservoir has had 10 species of shorebirds this week
including several Western Sandpipers and White-rumped Sandpiper, 15 Great
Egrets, a Little Blue Heron, and 8 Bald Eagles. The Lesser Scaup remains
at
Marsh Creek.

That's all for now. Contact me with any questions.
