Mike Iwanik, Vickie Gullet and myself went to Back Bay NWR in Virginia
Beach today with the hope of relocating the BLACK-BELLIED
WHISTLING-DUCKS reported there on Friday. After spending quite some
time scanning C and B pool, we finally saw them in flight over B pool.
The broad white wing stripe was very conspicuous in flight. They
eventually landed in C pool close to the cross dike and stood there
until we left. All 7 birds were still present.

Other notable birds seen there today included at least 20 immature WHITE
IBIS. Shorebirds included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
both YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, WILLET,
WHIMBREL, SANDERLING, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and LEAST SANDPIPER. On the
beach front, a dowitcher flew right in front of us and Mike and I
clearly heard it call "keek", which would make it a LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHER. Tern species included CASPIAN, ROYAL, COMMON, FORSTER'S,
GULL-BILLED and LEAST TERN. A female YELLOW WARBLER and a male PRAIRIE
WARBLER were seen flitting in the vegetation. There was a good showing
of YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS as several were seen and heard.

While eating lunch at Lynnhaven Inlet, a first year LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL was on a piling next to a HERRING GULL. Good birding.
