All,
In years past I've also seen Wilson's Storm-petrels in Chesapeake
Bay...both from he Virginia Western Shore and from the Smith Island
ferry that is based near Smith Point. The Western Shore sightings
provoked me into publishing a comprehensive paper on WISP sightings in
Chesapeake Bay, that was published in The Raven (the VSO's technical
serial publication) in about 1990 or 1991. That paper will provide
insight into Tyler Bell's sightings. I can't remember if there were any
Chesapeake Bay sightings of Band-rumped Storm-petrel during any of
Virginia's recent hurricane encounters but, in any case, a Band-rumped
Storm-petrel in the Bay unaided by a tropical system is probably a
first.

From Tyler Bell, from an MDOsprey post (with his permission) (WISP =
Wilson's Storm-petrel):
"I have a bunch of sightings over many days though most of our stations
were in NC waters. I'll summarize with approximate locations:
7/8 East of James River on the Chesapeake
1 WISP
7/9 East of lower Delmarva, 30 meters, 24.8C surface temp
4 WISP
1 Greater Shearwater
2 Cory's Shearwaters
1 Audubon's Shearwater
7/9 near NOAA 44014 buoy, ~50 meters, 25.0C
10 WISP
1 BRSP (Band-rumped Storm-petrel) (review species in VA, I'll submit
documentation)
7/13 Chesapeake SE of Smith Pt., 24.0C
1 WISP
Tyler Bell"
