[va-bird] Lubber Run Park, Arlington, July 1--Almost Washed Away!

VA Birders,
On Saturday morning, July 1, I decided to take a short walk at Lubber Run
Park, Arlington Co., to get a little exercise and to look for an Eastern
Wood-Pewee, since I had not seen one in the county yet this year. I parked at
the
Ampitheater, and walked west toward Route 50. Soon after passing the
restrooms, I discovered that the park had suffered serious damage from the
rains a
week or so earlier. The bridge across Lubber Run (stream) was gone; the metal
supports were in the stream, but the rest of the bridge had disappeared. Then
I realized that virtually all of the vegetation, except for a few large trees,
had been washed away on both sides of the stream all the way to Rt. 50. Only
a layer of silt was left, extending to the hillsides on both sides of the
stream! Amazingly, however, on my way back, I heard and then saw an EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEE near where the bridge used to be.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
Arlington, VA
