[va-bird] lots of bank swallows in Northern Neck

Between Leedstown and Oak Grove on Cottage Farm
Road in Westmoreland County I stopped to count
swallows on the utility lines at Cottage Farm
this afternoon. All the swallows were facing me,
making identifcation easy. I have never seen so
many bank swallows in one place. 216 bank
swallows, 2 tree swallows, 4 northern
rough-winged swallows, and 1 barn swallow (with
several other barn swallows around the barn). No
purple martins or cliff swallows. I suspect the
bank swallows are migrants since I know of no
breeding sites for them in the area.
All the best
fred
