VA BIRDers,
Nearly 10 birders turned out for the regular Sunday morning Field Trip to Dyke
Marsh on a day that threatened rain but did not make good on those threats
until we finished! Highlights of the day were a Least Bittern making its
typical 5 second flight over the cattails! Another was calling further up the
dogleg.
Also noted were 4 seasonally rare Lesser Scaup still hanging out in Hunting
Creek Bay, the first Greater Yellowlegs of the year, a single Yellow-billed
Cuckoo, and great looks at E. Wood Pewee, Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern
Kingbird and Warbling Vireo. We heard a few Marsh Wren, noted a sculking Brown
Thrasher carrying food, and witnessed the typically great oriole show in the
picnic area and along the trail.
